Management Tips:
Â
- Water: Provide clean, fresh water at all times. Horses that have been exercised should be cooled out properly before allowed access to water.
- Mineral: Provide free choice mineral and salt.
- Feed: When changing feeds, make the change gradually over 7–10 day period. Horses should be fed according to body condition; adjust the feeding rate as necessary for the desired body condition and activity level. Feed by weight not volume. Weigh the feed in the container you will be using and subtract the weight of the container. Divide feed into equal feedings and feed at regular intervals throughout the day. Work with your equine veterinarian on a total health care program that includes regular deworming, vaccinations and dental care.
- Feed Storage: Store feed properly to prevent exposure to moisture or contamination by insects or other pests. Never offer moldy hay or feed to horses.
Â
Feeding Guide:
Â
The following feeding directions are guidelines to maintain desired body condition and performance. Feeding rates need to be adjusted according to the horse’s body condition and activity level. Divide the recommended daily feeding rate into 2 or more meals per day and feed with good quality hay or pasture equivalent at the rate of 1.0-1.75 LB per 100 LB bodyweight or kg per 100 kg bodyweight to provide a minimum of 50% of the diet from forage. Performance horses may benefit from being fed more frequently. Do not overfeed growing horses to excess body condition. Start at lower feeding levels outlined below and adjust to maintain desired body condition. Daily Feeding Table:
Â
| Class of Horse | lb. Feed/100 lb. bodyweight |
| Maintenance | 0.50 – 1.25 |
| Performance Horse (light exercise) | 0.75 – 1.25 |
| Performance Horse (moderate exercise) | 1.00 – 1.50 |
